The history of the Hirschen Spa Hotel is closely linked to the region and the Greußing family. The hotel has been run with great passion and dedication for several generations. What began as a traditional inn has developed over the decades into a modern Spa Hotel without losing sight of its roots. The Hirschen is a piece of Vorarlberg hospitality brought to life.

The connection to the Bregenzerwald is evident in the architecture, materials and furnishings. Local craftsmen designed large parts of the house – from the wood used to the furniture and decorative details. The proximity to the region is evident in every room. Every detail shows an appreciation for traditional architecture, quality craftsmanship and natural materials. The result is an authentic, warm environment that feels modern yet remains deeply rooted in the Bregenzerwald.
The development of the house is characterised by continuous improvement while preserving its own identity. Carefully planned conversions, loving renovations and close cooperation with local craftsmen have made the Hirschen more modern, comfortable and versatile without losing its original character. Thus, the house remains an authentic piece of the Bregenzerwald, growing with the region while staying true to itself.
It was around 1700 when Jakob and Andreas Moosbrugger built the brewery and inn ‘Zum Hirschen’. The art of brewing played a major role for many years.
Christian Greußing (1843–1908), who married the innkeeper's daughter Maria Moosbrugger, was ultimately the last brewer at the Hirschen. The name Bierar has remained to this day, commemorating the brewing and serving of fine beer and the founding fathers of the Hirschen.
A beautiful "Wälderstube", built in 1890 by Kaspar Felder, a son of the local poet Franz Michael Felder, still serves as an à la carte restaurant in winter.
A new era began with Peter Greußing (1875–1958), a son of Christian. In 1920, Peter renovated the Hirschen extensively. As mayor of Schoppernau, he guided the community through the difficult years from 1918 to 1938.
Jakob Greußing (1906–1981) ran the hospitable establishment with his wife Albertina until 1970. During this time, they built the "Hirschensaal" with 120 seats and guest rooms.
After their marriage in October 1970, Peter and Marianne took over the inn and, through several phases of renovation and new construction in the 1970s and 1990s, turned it into a comfortable hotel. In 2003, the dining room, bar and a spacious wellness area were built, and finally, in 2005, with the active support of their son Christian, a panoramic indoor swimming pool was added.

In 2012, 14 double rooms were converted into pine rooms. During the 2015 renovation, a pine relaxation room, sports room and six spa treatment rooms were added to the existing indoor swimming pool. Three suites were added to the main building.
In spring 2018, the entire hotel lobby, bar, reception, buffet and wellness sauna area were renovated and modernised. The highlight is the new outdoor whirlpool. With Louis (2011) and Emilia (2014), the next generation is already present in the hotel.
